Creperie du Chateau has to be the only crepe restaurant that’s hosted half of the Dallas Mavericks, including owner Mark Cuban. Crepes + basketball players is not a formula you expect. But the Uptown creperie was opened by former Mav Didier Ilunga-Mbenga with partner Fatoumata Ndiaye, his agent’s wife and a native of France whose charming accent lingers.
Ilunga-Mbenga became an LA Laker, but that hasn’t stopped the rolling of the crepes. Everyone knows about sweet crepes with chocolate and fruit, but Ndiaye is passionate about her savory crepes filled with seafood, chicken, beef, or vegetables. Made from organic dark buckwheat flour, the crepes were delicious, with a nutty, earthy flavor. But it’s still about the fillings: lightly cooked scallops and shrimp in a cream sauce, or spicy ground beef with sour cream and salsa, a Tex-Mex twist on crepes.
Creperie has things other than crepes: steak, salads, sandwiches, and a worthy weekend brunch with omelets, thickly sliced cinnamon French toast, Belgian waffles, and mimosas. But don’t forget sweet crepes, with Nutella, roasted apples, and bananas, as well as the classic Suzette with Grand Marnier.
