Interior designer Barbara Daseke, makes a powerful first impression. Her bold style of dress is matched only by her striking platinum hair. As president of Barbara Elliott Interiors, Daseke travels the country designing hotels and residences, but she’s also passionate about fashion. “My two loves really complement each other,” she says. “I’m inspired by everything.”

Does fashion influence home design?
“It absolutely does. Inspiration really goes back and forth between the two mediums. A lot of the fabrics on the design side are used in fashion, and vice versa. Also, fashion labels like Missoni and Armani are getting into home design, which seems natural.”

How are you inspired by fashion?
“I’m inspired by trends I see in magazines, or what I see when I’m shopping. I’m also inspired when I travel. First and foremost, it’s about color. I like unexpected color combinations in clothes, and I like to do that with my interiors as well.”

What is a good way to incorporate a trend into your home?
“If a person wants to experiment, it’s a good idea to start small. I would start with a pillow, a duvet cover, or a lamp, for a splash of color. You can bring in a trend by just adding a pillow.”

OTHER FASHION TRENDS THAT WORK FOR THE HOME:

Jewel tones, especially reds, oranges, and purples
Animal prints in new colors
Embellishments, such as feathers and beads
Unusual leathers for bags and upholstery
