Denim’s come a long way since the 1800s, when Levi Strauss first introduced the sturdy fabric to miners and other hard laborers. In the 1980s, denim took a turn toward high fashion and has recently been seen on designer catwalks at Chanel, Dior, Chloé, and Versace.

The latest trend is the skinny jean, available in many colors and cuts. For the most flattering fit, choose a dark shade like deep indigo or black. Pair with a free-flowing top, like this silk georgette pleated tank by Julie Haus, and balance the look with chunky shoes. Throw on a cropped jacket, and shed it for an easy day-to-night transition. Quick tip: although denim can be dressed up, it’s not appropriate for all occasions. Wear it wisely.

Nicole is wearing silk tank by Julie Haus ($260/Elements); Nina Ricci cropped jacket ($1,590/Stanley Korshak); Rag & Bone black jeans ($255/LFT); Renee Lewis diamond “shaker” necklace ($24,800/Barneys New York); Munno platinum, diamond, and gold bangles ($17,000-$29,000/Barneys New York); and Shutz patent wedge platforms ($258/Gregory’s, Galleria Dallas).
