If you’re not up for baking a holiday turkey yourself, plenty of caterers and markets will do it for you, with all the fixings, too. But if it’s Tofurky you want, head to Spiral Diner in Fort Worth. Tofurky is, as it sounds, a “turkey” made of tofu, seasoned and compressed to impersonate turkey’s flavor and texture—sorta. If that doesn’t get your mouth watering, Spiral also has Unturkey, made of mmm-tasty wheat gluten and cunningly molded into a turkey shape. Fool your friends! A party-size 7-pound Unturkey with gravy and stuffing goes for $45; a small Tofurky, enough for three to four happy veg-heads, costs $13. Side dishes such as garlic mashed or coconut sweet potatoes contain no milk, eggs, or honey; they’re $12 and serve four to six. By next Thanksgiving, you’ll be able to get your Tofurky fix at a new Spiral Diner spin-off, set to open in East Dallas (address still TBD) in early ’07. And if you want to take a crack at cooking your own Tofurky, find them in the freezer case at Sprouts, Whole Foods Market, and Central Market.
