THUMB AWARD Values Yes, Vigilantes No

|

Thumbs down to Pauline Medrano and her Oak Lawn neighborhood Crime Watch volunteers for using tactics bordering on vigilantism to clean up prostitution on Harry Hines. The motives of the neighborhood group are certainly understandable and commendable. But patrolling the area, taking the license numbers of suspected “Johns,” then tracking the owners and informing their employers, is going too far. What’s more, the enthusiastic citizen crime fighters have pians to picket bars and motels that serve as meeting places for drug dealers and their clientele-a plan that police have said may lead to violence. Let’s go after crime, but let’s do it safely and sanely.
