The question, put to twelve local talk-show hosts: If you could have any living person as your guest, who would it be and what would you discuss?

1. Rich Bryan, KEGL

“I’d like to talk with Paul McCartney, for my own selfish reasons. The guy changed the world with his music. I’d also like to talk about his relationship with John Lennon.”

2. Alex Barton, KRLD

“I’d like to interview Terry Waite and ask him where the hell he’s been for the past year and how he’s been treated and if he thinks that Lebanon is capable of self-government, and does he think that the people who kidnapped him belong in the community of nations.”

3. Mitch Carr, KVIL

“I’d like to set up a conference call with Reagan and Gorbachev. We’d talk about glasnost, the evil empire, and find out what we can do. Arc we going to war, or are we going to build Disney World in Moscow?”

4. Karen Denard, KERA

“Winnie Mandela. I’d like to know how she keeps going, how she stays in a struggle with overwhelming odds against her and black South Africans.”

5. David Gold, KLIF

“Alexander Solzhenitsyn. I think we’d talk about the naivete of many Western leaders and many people in the media about the Soviet Union.”

6. Jeff Hillery, KMGC

“I’d like to talk to the Gloved One-Michael Jackson. He hasn’t given an interview in four years. He’s the Howard Hughes of pop music. Why does he want to buy the Elephant Man’s bones? I think maybe he and his sister Janet are one and the same. They’re never seen or photographed together.”

7. Norm Hitzges, KERA and KLIF

“Muhammad Ali. I’d like to get him on a day when he’s still there, when he’s not bothered by the memory lapses and slurred speech. Who’s really in there? So much of him was hype, and when he became The Greatest, he had to keep that up. I wonder if there’s still a Cassius Clay in Muhammad Ali?”

8. Marlin Maddoux, KVTT

“Daniel Ortega. We would talk about his basic philosophy of Marxism, Leninism, and gel from him his real beliefs on human nature, the existence of God. civil and religious freedoms, and freedom of the press. What kind of society is he dedicated to bringing about in Nicaragua. Central America, and the world? And I’d tell him to stop lying and be honest.”

9. Vicki Robbins, KAAM and KZPS

“Gary Hart. I’d like to get him to talk candidly about Donna Rice, and where the public’s right to know ends.”

10. Robyne Robinson, Channel 8

“I’d love to talk to J.D. Salinger about how his stories have influenced people. Mark David Chapman and John Hinckley both read his stories. I wonder if he is like any of his characters. And of course, everyone wants to know why he stopped writing and has stayed quiet so long.”

11. Brad Sham, KRLD

“Red Auerbach and Bobby Knight. I’d ask them what has made them so successful in spite of the fact that they are so personally difficult.”

12. Norm Ward, KNON

“Somebody who could tell us something we don’t know-like who shot JFK. I don’t believe it was Oswald. Richard Nixon would also be a fascinating interview. People give him a hard time on Watergate, but there were so many other things-China, getting the war in Vietnam over. . .”
