BRAECKLEIN MAKES A WRONG TURN?

|

State Senator Bill Braeck-lein probably should have fought rather than switch. Since the long-time Democrat jumped ship to the GOP a couple of months ago, he’s had no luck finding a campaign chairman or a fund-raising heavy for his re-election bid. Apparently it’s nothing personal: Republican politicians who might qualify for the posts just seem to have better things to do with their time – like work for Reagan or Connally or Bush. Also, some Republicans may be waiting to see if City Councilman John Leedom jumps into the Republican primary against Braecklein. In any case, the cold shoulder is seen as a slap at Governor Bill Clements, who promoted Braecklein’s defection heavily. Seems Dallas Republicans weren’t all that impressed.
