As proprietors of the  Design District’s newest vintage haunt, Scout Design Studio, sisters Tiffany Taylor Lapidus and Brittany Taylor spend a lot of time doing something they swore they’d never do. As children, the girls dreaded their annual summer vacation driving across America with their parents in search of antiques shops. They loved design; they just preferred the new stuff. “We vowed we’d never buy anything old,” Brittany says.

Cut to two decades later when, while pursuing careers in the health care industry, the sisters began traversing some of the same roads they traveled as kids. Trailer in tow, they embarked on long-haul treasure hunts through Florida, Georgia, Arkansas, and the famed Brimfield Antique Show in Massachusetts.

The self-proclaimed furniture shopaholics quickly ran out of space for their finds and soon were in the midst of major career changes, channeling their passion for design into Scout, a 14,000-square-foot space filled with sleek midcentury chairs, lacquered Hollywood Regency consoles, and quirky statement accessories (think a stuffed peacock and a giant giraffe).

All those miles logged allow the sisters to bring a fresh approach to a seemingly saturated vintage market, and the ladies are committed to keeping their stock exciting. “It’s one thing to open a store with great stuff,” Brittany says, “but the real accomplishment is finding cool things for the long haul, and we’re obsessive about it.” It is, after all, in their blood.
