Back in the days before Kindles and Amazon.com, I spent my summers at the library. I escaped the heat (not to mention the humidity) and entered worlds created by Madeleine L’Engle, Judy Blume, and Jackie Collins (before Mom put a stop to that). The school year was all about learning because I had to—summers were about learning stuff because I wanted to. I read about people and places that weren’t part of my fifth-grade existence—be it pesky younger brothers or Hollywood wives. And it led to a lifetime of learning a whole lot about everything I don’t know anything about.
My sense of wonder remains as strong as ever, and that’s why I’m particularly excited about this issue. Ever wonder how noted restaurateur Al Biernat looks in jeans rather than in his usual suit? The answer: amazing. He and wife Jeannie take us off the grid on a tour of their Colorado vacation home. Next up: curious about what society-page staples Natalie and Mike McGuire’s house is like? Peggy Levinson and photographer Tim Kolk provide the scoop about this lovely couple and their fabulous kids. Speaking of kids, do you struggle with combining stylish serenity with the chaos of kiddos? Visit the home of Wendy Konradi—where chic meets children without a glitch—and glean some inspiration.
And in the spirit of exploration, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the smashing D Art Slam at f.i.g. that kicked off the summer. Wick Allison and John Sughrue had the brilliant idea of hosting a three-day juried event showcasing and celebrating the Dallas arts community. The event featured the work of more than 150 local artists, and more than 2,000 people came to check it out. Didn’t make it this year? No worries. Plans are already in the works for next May. So, we’ll plan on seeing you there in 2010.
