Is breast feeding possible after a breast augmentation?

Breast implants may or may not affect your ability to breastfeed. Some women with natural breasts are not able to breast feed, and many women with breast implants can breastfeed. You will not know if you can breast feed until you become pregnant.

What are the different types of breast implants?

In addition to different sizes there are material and shape options when selecting breast implants. There are two basic types of implants, saline or silicone. Saline implants have a silicone shell filled with salt water. Silicone implants also have silicone shell, but are filled with silicone gel. Both come in different shapes, such as low, medium and high profiles. At your consultation appointment, I will help assist you in selecting the right implant for you.

What is the recovery time for a breast augmentation?

Recovery time is different for each breast augmentation patient. In most cases, patients do well with the recovery portion of the procedure. You can expect some slight discomfort from chest muscle stretching. I will give you mild pain medication to ease the soreness. The majority of patients return to work only a few days after their breast augmentation surgery. Most patients return to light aerobic exercise in a few weeks, but it takes longer before returning to upper body exercises such as weight lifting. It is important to allow your body time to heal and not jump into your pre-surgery routine too quickly.

One of my breasts is larger than the other. What can be done about this?

Know that this is not uncommon; almost all women have some sort of asymmetry in their breasts. If your breasts are slightly different shapes before surgery, they will remain slightly different after surgery. In some patients, two different size implants will be used to make the breasts appear more even.

Can I have breast implants and still look natural?

Yes, we can discuss expectations for what your breasts will look like after the augmentation. In general, silicone breast implants look more natural than saline breast implants, especially if you are thin and have small breasts. Likewise, if you are thin, placing the implants under the muscle will give you a more natural shape in the upper part of the breast. Picking an implant size that is not too large for your body will also help to make your body look more natural.
