Being a bit of a “first date” serial dater the past few years, there are only so many coffee dates you can get excited about. Don’t get me wrong: I appreciate sitting in a cozy café or cool bar, weaving through conversation and getting to know someone. But it’s fun to venture off the typical, expected path.

I love when there’s the potential element for awkwardness. Nothing gets you out of your comfort zone more than a bust of laughter on a date. So here are five sure ways to invite –and embrace – the awkward. Think of it as a choose-your-own-adventure date.

Laughing Yoga at Cosmic Café

I’m always game for an active date. I’ve been on yoga dates, running dates, flying trapeze dates … you name it. But I’ve never been in a yoga class where chuckling and cackling is a requirement. As there is a mixed bag full of innovative yoga concoctions, I wasn’t surprised when I learned of laughing yoga. With careful eye contact and the contorting of your body in unusual poses, you’ve got yourself a dream first date. Cosmic Café offers a laughing yoga classes every Wednesday. Even better? It will only cost you a smile.

When: 7 p.m. Wednesdays

Where: Cosmic Café

Check out the café’s class schedule here.

Laugh It Out at Dallas Comedy House

Nothing makes my heart go pitter-patter as much as a guy who can make me laugh. I’ve been on a date to an improv show before but to actually be put to the test? I’m still waiting. Dallas Comedy House’s bread and butter is improv, stand up, and sketch comedy. Guards will come tumbling down with a date at Dallas Comedy House. If you’re too sheepish to take the comedy into your own hands, you can always attend a show and enjoy from the audience.

Here’s more information about DCH’s classes and shows.

Dig for Dinos

Perhaps I’m a minority among my lady friends, but I dig dinosaurs – literally and figuratively. Take a field trip to Dinosaur World in Glen Rose. Some of the best bonding moments are spent during the ride. The park stretches across 20 acres, so you can pack in a whole day full of digging and exploration. And along the same dino vibe, Fossil Rim Wildlife Center is another equally science-rich option. So bust out those fossil brushes and Dr. Grant hat, and prepare for a non-glamorous, but incredibly memorable, date.

Fly Though the Trinity Forest

For the more adventurous and competitive duo, take your next date outside. With more than 20 zip lines, Trinity Forest Adventure Park will leave you with a bit of an adrenaline rush, and this excursion will test out you and your date’s teamwork potential. The date doesn’t have to end at the last zip line. Head over to one of the park’s six obstacle courses and make your way across wobbly bridges or scale a wall. If anything, the safety harness-and-helmet combo is a disarming look.

Dance the Night Away

It’s engrained in us to affiliate dancing with date night. I have two spins on the dance floor to offer up. Put on your best pair of boots and scoot them around the floor at Billy Bob’s Texas in Fort Worth. Take advantage of the “world’s largest honky tonk.” Even if you both are terrible two-steppers, people-watching is fun and you can’t go wrong with the live music. If you’re looking for some more complicated dance moves that may involve some flips and dips, head to the treasured swing dance haunt Sons of Hermann Hall in Deep Ellum. The Dallas Swing Dance Society offers swing dance lessons, if you don’t want to venture in blindly.
