ARCHITECT EXPLANATION

Written by Todd Hamilton, AIA, Todd Hamilton Architects

The utter simplicity in the design and execution of the stairway is what makes us love this unassuming space. The mitered white oak tread and riser give the stair a block look. The steel black handrail ties in with the black hardware used throughout the house. Directly above is an operable skylight, which is the highest point of the house. Based on its height and location within the home, when the skylight is opened along with other windows, natural cooling and ventilation is created due to the stack effect.
