As promised, blogger and design doyenne Hilary Walker will be joining us each week here on the D Home blog to talk all things “feathering your first nest.” This week she takes on the humble yet utterly room-transforming throw pillow. Enjoy!

Hello again D Home blog! Last week’s introductory post was fun and all but let’s get down to business and start discussing how you can feather your first nest creatively and stylish, shall we?

When you’re decorating on a small budget or just beginning to furnish your home from scratch, it can feel as though there are a lot of blank spots around the house. Vacant corners, empty walls, bare surfaces… all these make for a very cold and uninviting space. Am I describing your home? Don’t fret! There are lots of ways to make improvements but one method that I especially love is the use of a few good cozy pillows and throws. Your sofa and chairs are obvious places to throw decorative accents but think about other empty spots that could use a little softening up. Often times, a desk chair is an ideal spot for sprucing up. I used a favorite faux mongolian fur pillow on a desk chair that I recently purchased from a Fort Worth thrift store. It’s perfect for my space and gives the whole room a distinctive boho-coziness (not to mention, I love sitting at my desk now)! Placing a few carefully chosen plush pillows or soft throws on your bed can be a lovely addition as well.

I gathered a collection of my favorite accent pillows and throws that you can find in stores now. It’s all about texture these days!

And now that we’ve had not one, not two, but several chilly mornings here in Dallas, you’ll want to cozy up in a pile of soft pillows and throws more than ever!!

(Ed. note: Until Hilary returns next week, you can keep up with her on her blogFacebookTwitter, and Pinterest.)
