Our lovely intern Caitlin hit McKinney for a little mother/daughter shopping trip (the best type in my humble opinion) and in the process discovers a new home boutique that’s right in her wheelhouse.

My mom came in town last weekend and we decided to do something different, so we escaped the city and spent an afternoon strolling the McKinney Square. Somewhere between brunch and too many antique shops to count, we popped into designTEN 1 Interiors (DT1) to check out the newly opened shop.
Jennifer Akerman, interior designer and owner of DT1, opened the shop on the McKinney Square in early September. The boutique carries a variety of home accessories, including Jonathan Adler, Seda France candles, antiques from the east coast, holiday gifts, and furniture. DT1 also sells paintings by local artists Ashley Bruegal and Denise Kendrick, and colored glass cutting boards by Cicely Miller.
Akerman has coined her store’s inventory as “modasic,” a term she uses to describe her eclectic mix of modern and classic pieces.
After shopping for the perfect addition to your home décor, you can sit at the counter where Akerman has set up a designBAR to help customers with home projects. The designBAR is geared toward the do-it-yourself type, whether it be choosing the perfect paint color or reupholstering a chair. But good news if you are not skilled at DIY projects (ahem, me): Akerman and her team offer their full services from conception to completion, noting, “I find that people have a good idea of what they want their spaces to look like as a final outcome but they don’t know how to get from point A to point B to make their space is desirable,” Akerman said. “Decorating with fabrics, furniture, fixtures and more should be a goal anyone can obtain while having fun with designTen 1 to accomplish the final product.”
Akerman is also in the process of settling up a “library” in a back room that will house design magazines, color wheels, and fabric swatches so clients can look for attainable inspiration from some of their favorite publications.
Insider tip: Time your trip right and you could be lucky enough to catch one of Akerman’s “orange dot” sales. She marks sale items with orange stickers but does not publicize the sales so you’ll have to have luck on your side. Sadly, timing has never been one of my strong suits so I missed said sale.
