On the Dallas Dad Bod

You won't find these guys at the gym, but here are four versions you might see around town.

The dad bod’s abuzz on the Internet and for good reason. Dudes who love beer and don’t like the gym are finally getting the respect they deserve. Ladies who have always loved guys who love beer and hate the gym are taking note. And forget bacon, fitness enthusiasts l-o-v-e to hate the fad. It’s viral on the web and it’s alive and well in Dallas, too. You won’t find these guys jogging on the Katy Trail or riding bikes around White Rock, but you will see these four distinct dad bods around town. Here, we share how to keep your eyes on the trend and what to do if you want to shed the dad bod physique just in time for summer.

The SMU Dad Bod
While they are still in the prime of their life, conditions on The Hilltop are a breeding ground for dad bod. The Mustangs were the worst football team in the NCAA last season. All that losing allows for ample opportunities to eat and drink one’s feelings. You’ll find plenty of these dad bods on SMU Boulevard and Greenville Avenue patios forgetting their school’s football woes.

The Public Official Dad Bod
Save a spot at the horseshoe for this dad bod. He just won an election in which much of the city didn’t bother to vote. Not only that but the margin of victory was almost twice his pant size. That doesn’t mean that fitness was hollow promise of the campaign trail. How could it be with the bike infrastructure he touted and fitness camps at Klyde Warren and the Continental Bridge? GrowSouth isn’t just about his stomach, after all.

The Deep Ellum Dad Bod
Tattoos? Check. Jean jacket? Check. Skinny jeans? Check. Dad bod? Double check. Walking from show to show hasn’t helped shed the pounds for the Deep Ellum Dad Bod. All of those Lone Star’s, PBRs, and slices from Serious Pizza haven’t helped either. When the sun is up, this dad bod ventures to Forest Hills to lounge poolside at FOE with a burger and a beer. After all that time spent in dark clubs, soaking up some vitamin D is necessary.

The Billionaire Sports Team Owner Dad Bod
This outspoken dad bod loves the spotlight. Nonetheless, his passion for it is evident through exaggerated outbursts from the sidelines and chasing star athletes in free agency. While his figure may have betrayed him over the years, this dad bod loves to hold court on a stair-stepper, answering media questions, before games. What better time to get those steps in?

Dad Bod, Begone!
So you want to shed the dad bod, huh? Here’s how to do it:

1. Camp Gladiator
Every few weeks, this high-intensity camp starts a four-week program. While the workouts are intense, the four-week commitment makes it a bit easier to get moving.

2. Couch-to-5K
Join a beginner’s running clubs to go from being a couch potato to 5K finisher. There are programs at both RunOn! And Luke’s Locker, but you can also download the Couch-to-5K app if you prefer to go it alone.

3. So You Love Drinking?
Sure you do, but you don’t have to go for the mega-calorie drinks every time you’re at the bar. Check out our guide to low-cal sips around the city.
