Fitness Class Review: Uptown Yoga

A studio so light and airy that you'll want to do sun salutations from dawn until dusk.

The Class: An all-level Vinyasa Flow class that brings together standing and sitting postures into a cohesive, unified sequence.

The Appeal: There are a lot of studios out there, but when I moved to Dallas a few months back, this was resoundingly the one I heard about. Lucky for me, the yoga style and studio itself were a fit from the start.

The Space: When you walk into the Uptown studio, you’ll notice right off the bat that there’s something to sunlit sun salutations. The space is airy, with high ceilings and uncovered brick walls. At the front, you’ll find cushioned benches to change shoes or wait for the next class to begin. At the back, cubbies hold yogis possessions while they’re in practice.

The studio itself is a large, with wooden floors, but my afternoon class was packed, so there were lots of mats that needed the extra space. There is a “mirror wall” that has a handful of tall, framed mirrors interspersed. Light peaks in from high window at the top of the studio where the instructor leads class from a raised platform.

Who’s There: Yogis from all walks of life.

How It Went: I fell in love with the class! I’ve been to yoga sessions that feel a bit choppy, with awkward transitions from pose to pose. This was the opposite. We started alternating between Cat and Cow and soon moved into sun salutations. All the usual suspects were here: we moved through a warrior sequence to triangle and did a fair amount of standing poses counterbalanced with floor work.

What I really liked was that our instructor allowed us the opportunity to get into positions. We sat in Pigeon pose past the point of restlessness, which was a nice change. Late into the flow, we finished in Bridge and closed with a relaxing Savasana. It’s not that anything was particularly unique, it was just a very good yoga classes. Yoga, perfected.

The Aftermath: I felt mentally and physically fit after my class.

Loved: I love that we had time to move from pose to pose without feeling rushed. We were given time get from Point A to Point B, but the class still kept a good tempo. Plus, the studio is so warm and inviting, you’ll want to spend hours here.

Hated: After class, the cubby section got a bit crowded and congested, but having reached an inner zen, it wasn’t so bad.

Cost: There’s a special if you’re new to the studio that lets you get 10 days for $10. Other than that, there are class and unlimited packages starting at $130.

Difficulty Level: The great thing about so many of the classes at Uptown Yoga (and around town) is that they’re good for beginners and advanced yogis. My instructor was fantastic at showing the class different variations so we could tone down or amp up our workout, depending on how comfortable we were in the posture.
