A Matter of Taste: Daily Greens

Which of the cold-pressed juices did our editors like best?

Shauna Martin, founder of Daily Greens, was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 33. After enduring chemotherapy, she was desperate to find something that would help detox her body. She started studying the connection between food and disease and on that journey she discovered green juice—at a time when there wasn’t a juice bar on every corner.

Thanks to juicing, Martin recovered quickly and stayed healthy. Her rebound was so successful that many of her friends, and even strangers, began asking her for recipes and tips she’d come across while blending her own recipes. The first flavor she experimented with was purity—a concoction of kale, parsley, broccoli, cucumber, and celery—and is a consumer favorite even today.

After all the positive feedback, Martin took her juice to a local famers market. From there to the shelves of Whole Foods and on to local grocers like Kroger, Tom Thumb, and Central Market  (not to mention the Daily Greens website www.drinkdailygreens.com).

Here, Online Managing Editor Ali Finney kindly (though it wasn’t very hard to convince her) joined me in a blind taste test of the complete menu.

Purity
Kale, parsley, broccoli, cucumber, celery, lemon, basil
A: Soft. Greenish tasting. Thin consistency.
B: Nicely balanced.

Vitality
Kale, jalapeno, pineapple, cucumber, cilantro, celery, lime
A: Cucumber!!! Smooth.
B: Cucumber. A cooling spring green.

Renew
Mint, spinach, cucumber, watermelon, dandelion, pineapple, celery, lime, Himalayan pink salt
A: Spicy. Taste kind of like apple juice
B: Carrot – Brownish

Rejuvenate
Carrot, romaine, pineapple, spinach, collard greens, lemon, turmeric root
A: Sweet and smooth. Hint of cucumber
B: Tastes a lot like #2 (Vitality)

Elevate
Pear, spinach, watercress, cucumber, lime, Madagascar vanilla
A: Spicier. Cilantro? Not fruity.
B: Earthy. Very green tasting

Harmony
Kale, celery, fennel, lemon, apple, pear, ginger root
A: Not my favorite. Sour.
B: Earthy, not sweet.

Enlighten
Hemp seeds, Klamath Lake blue-green algae, Madagascar vanilla, coconut nectar, camu camu, Himalyan pink salt
A: Chocolate and almond, maybe?
B: Nut-based. Tastes like dessert!

Replenish
Hemp seeds, wheatgrass, Madagascar vanilla, coconut nectar, camu camu, cocoa
A: Dark chocolate and a nutty aftertaste.
B: Chocolate-tasting

Shauna’s favorite?
I love all of them, but Rejuvenate is one of my favorites.
