Sponsored: Finding YOUR Personal Trainer

A personal trainer is just that, PERSONAL! Finding the right fit is just as important as finding a doctor, therapist or hairdresser that you trust.

Here are some guidelines I would use in choosing the trainer that’s right for you:

1. Observe

Assuming you belong to a gym that offers personal training, watch them work with their clients. Trust me, this one simple step will tell you more about the trainer than you can imagine. If the trainer stands with their arms folded away from the client, talks excessively, doesn’t demonstrate some of the exercises, has their phone out (disguising it as a timer), isn’t hands on with the weights, drinks coffee rather than instructing or repeats the same workouts every time you see them with a client– RUN! This person is not a trainer. This person is there to take your money, not to help you achieve your health and fitness goals.

2. Ask questions

When you find someone you think may be a good fit to train you, interview him or her! Seriously, ask questions.  Here are a few to start with: What is their training background? What types of certification do they have? Why did they become a trainer? What is their training philosophy? Tell them your goals and ask what a fitness program would look like for you. If you have any injuries, ask how they will work with them.

3. Listen

When the trainer starts to answer your questions make sure you pay close attention. If they really love what they do they will enthusiastically answer these questions and want you to join in their passion for fitness. A good trainer will also admit when they don’t have a fact-based answer for your question, but will be willing to find out. If you suspect they are making something up, they probably are!

4. Professionalism

I can’t put enough stress on this last point. When you begin working with your trainer, make sure you feel at ease and comfortable opening up and expressing how you feel. The relationship, while based on your fitness goals, must also include interest in you as a person. This goes back to them putting the attention on you, not them! If your trainer cancels more than 2-3 times in a 3 month period or is late the same amount of times, drop them! Scheduling conflicts happen. However, your time is important and must be respected!
