Texas roots run deep in Washington Capitals forward Chris Brown. Born and raised here, the former University of Michigan Wolverine turned pro hockey player keeps a major place in his heart for Dallas.

This pick-up drivin’, country music lovin’ hockey player proudly represents his home state even when he’s far afield. During his college days, the student section at Michigan waved a giant lone-star flag in honor of their favorite Texan. It’s no surprise that fans everywhere fall in love with his southern charm.

Chris lives in Flower Mound (he’s a former Flower Mound High School Jaguar), spending every offseason deep in the heart of Texas, just like he likes it.

I sat down with Chris, cowboy boots and all, to chat about his workout routine and his hometown favorites.

D: If you’ve got only 20 minutes to work out, what’s your routine?
Chris Brown: A light boxing routine. Boxing incorporates all aspects of hockey. The obvious aspect is the fighting, but the real benefit is the cardio and “hand-eye” coordination.

What’s your typical daily workout routine?
A cardio warm-up followed by hockey-specific weight training and agility work.

What’s your usual breakfast?
Eggs with toast, avocado and Cholula sauce, with a protein shake.

Do they sell Cholula sauce up north?
Yes, but it’s hard to find.

What is your go-to cheat meal?
Pizza, most likely pepperoni and sausage.

Name a song from your workout playlist.
Chevelle’s “The Red”
