The big marathons are over for the year, and we have to bridge our training before diving in for the fall. We asked Marcus Grunewald, executive director for the Dallas Marathon, for the best races to keep us going.

Though there are several half-marathons available, only the more experienced and best-trained runners should attempt those in 110-degree heat. But there are plenty of 10ks, 5ks, and fun runs to keep us all motivated. Here are Grunewald’s top picks for summer running.

June 7, Fort Worth
Joe’s Run
Distance: 5K and 10K
Cost: $20-$40, depending on when you register
Lowdown: This is a colorful, tropical-themed run where you not only get to work off a few calories but also gain back some as well. After the run, join the Cheezeburgerz N Parrot-dise party complete with food and a Jimmy Buffet tribute band. Though we don’t condone the way the organization spells cheezeburgerz, we do love “Margaritaville.”

June 8, Irving
Wounded Warrior
Distance: Half-marathon and 10K
Cost: $64-$89, depending on when you register, and which distance
Lowdown: This fifth annual event benefits the Wounded Warrior Project, a nonprofit started to serve military service members who were injured during battle. Show your support by running hard, then enjoying the post-race party.

June 14, Plano
2014 Komen North Texas Plano Race for the Cure
Distance: 5K
Cost: $35 for an individual
Lowdown: Join a team, start a team, or register as an individual for this run/fundraiser. The course goes around the offices of HP and The Campus at Legacy.

June 28, Richardson
Peace. Love, Run 5K
Distance: 5K
Cost: $20- $35, depending on when you register
Lowdown: This groovy race benefits Back on My Feet, a nonprofit that helps homeless people by running with them. For this race, there’s even an option for your non-running friends: they can sleep in and skip the race, but still get the shirt.

July 5, Dallas
Independence 5K and 10K
Distance: 5K and 10K
Cost: $10 for nonmembers
Lowdown: Work off Independence Day’s hotdogs and burgers by joining the Dallas Running Club for a lap around White Rock Lake.

July 13, Dallas
Too Hot to Handle
Distance: 5K, 15K
Cost: $20-$65, depending on when you register
Lowdown: For 19 years, this race has been getting people out in the heat to race. If you ran the Too Cold to Hold race earlier this year, you’ll definitely want to do this one (the metals interlock).

August 24, Dallas
Hottest Half and 10K
Distance: 10K, Half Marathon
Cost: $50-$85, depending on when you register
Lowdown: The starting point for this race is Community Beer Company Brewery, so though it’ll be a hot race, it’ll also be refreshing (at least at the start and finish). Come hydrated.
