Class Review: Firestarter at Equinox

Thirty minutes of straight cardio will leave you wanting more.

The Class: If you’re looking for a quick, fat-burning fix, Firestarter is for you. As the name alludes, this fast-paced class consists of strictly cardio. From jumping jacks to dropping it like it’s hot (think squats), expect to continuously stay on the move as soon as the beat drops.

The Appeal: We all know that cardio is the easiest way to burn fat, but it’s personally not always my favorite thing to do. Running burns the most fat for me, but I find it to be boring. So, if you’re like me and looking for a quick, fun way to burn calories, this class is it.

The Instructor: The class launched in January, and Will Amason is the perfect instructor for it. He’s fun, energetic, and I loved how he chatted with people before and after the class.

Who’s There: I went to a 9:30 a.m. Saturday class, expecting no one to be there. It was full. Everyone was smiling and talking to each other, making it apparent that they were regulars. I filed in line to grab equipment and, as I grabbed a weight, an older woman informed me that I only needed to grab a stair step. Grateful for the advice, I thanked her; she smiled, welcoming me to the class.

How It Went: The class began with a few quick stretches, and then Will gave us the rundown on how it would work. The class consisted of fast cardio moves performed in timed intervals with small bouts of recovery time permitted. Most of the moves involved regular footwork, but there were some that required use of the stair step. The music was upbeat, and I was impressed with my ability to keep up with all of the moves. My heart was racing, I was sweating bullets, and my face quickly turned beet red about 10 minutes into it. But, honestly, I enjoyed all 30 minutes of it.

This class is really fast-paced, so if you’re looking for something slow, this isn’t the one.

The Aftermath: Once the class ended, everyone exchanged high fives, and Will asked that those who were leaving to leave their stair steps. Armed And Dangerous was up next, and it involved weights. Yes, I was a sweaty mess, but the Firestarter class left me feeling amazing. I happily grabbed a set of dumbbells and stayed for the next class.

Loved: Even though it’s pure cardio (which I normally hate), this class was pretty fun. The energy in the room was great, and everyone seemed excited to be there. Will did fun things during our break intervals (like asking us to high five someone with a ponytail), and the music was awesome.

Difficulty Level: As quick as everything goes, Will did showcase modified moves, which I noticed many people doing. Again, this class is really fast-paced, so if you’re looking for something slow, this isn’t the one. It also requires stamina to make it through each of the intervals, so be sure to get plenty of rest and drink lots of water the day before taking this class. Luckily, I did both, which was key in helping me successfully make it through.
