We’ll soon be cozying up in comfy sweaters and stashing away our bikinis, but we should be mindful of how the changing weather affects the health of our skin. Hiatus Spa manager Dana Baum and celebrity facialist Joanna Czech suggest transitioning your skincare regimen with the changing of the seasons. Incorporating these subtle changes can give your skin what it needs.

HYDRATE

Baum suggests adjusting your cleanser from a more-purifying to a less-drying option as well as regularly using an exfoliator that isn’t too abrasive. But with moisturizers, Texas is a special case. “You can sometimes extend the use of your lighter moisturizer well into the fall months because it’s still 90 degrees outside,” Baum says. “If you need more hydration but hate the feel of a thicker option, layering a hyaluronic acid product like SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Gel will definitely make a difference.” Also look for products containing Vitamins C, A, and E, which are full of antioxidants and natural sun protectors.

ADOPT A NIGHTLY SKINCARE REGIME

Czech says skin regimes during the summer should be low maintenance and mild. But fall is the perfect time to get a little more aggressive with your skincare routine. “Your nightly skincare lineup should consist of products containing active Vitamin A, which helps replenish lost hyaluronic acid, as well as Vitamin C, which helps brighten skin and speed up the cellular turnover,” Czech says. “A few of my personal favorites are Second Skin by Biologique and Genaissance De La Mer ‘The Serum’ Essence by La Mer. I also love to use Vitamin C peels. I love the South African skincare line, Environ.”

BENEFITS OF PROFESSIONAL SKINCARE SERVICES

Facials are often a fun excuse to have an afternoon of pampering. But Baum and Czech say that professional facials and services can aid immensely in the health of your skin. “As a seasoned esthetician and skincare professional, I recommend that clients get a series of chemical or mechanical peels which address hyper pigmentation, fine lines, and dehydration,” Czech says. “I will typically use a combination of LED therapy, ultra sound therapy, and oxygen infusion based on their skin condition and the results they are looking for.” Czech performs many of these treatments on her clients in her Victory Park spa.

Baum recommends getting a seasonal skin assessment and suggests asking about the products used during your treatment and what at-home care your esthetician suggests. “But keep in mind that what’s new, trendy, and in every magazine will not always be the best products for your skin,” Baum says. “Being an educated consumer is the best way to avoid buyer’s remorse.”

AT-HOME SKINCARE TREATMENTS

Baum’s go-to at-home treatment when she’s in between facials is the HydroPeptide Anti-Wringle Polish and Plump Peel. “It is hands down one of the most effective treatments I have ever used,” Baum says. “It gives you the kind of glow that you get from a professional service. My everyday go to product is SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2. I have seen great results since making it my primary corrective moisturizer.” She says it’s just as important to take care of the skin on your body, just as you would your face.
