Public transit isn’t rocket science. To get people to ride it, it should be safe, reliable, and easy to use. DART is rarely any of these things.
So how do you fix it? Simple. Add more buses that come more frequently to more locations. Or, at least, that’s what Seattle did. After voters approved a huge investment in public transit — and to upgrade bus service, in particular — Seattle built out a network that hopes to place 72 percent of its residents within walking distance of a bus that runs every 12 minutes. And as that system has expanded, lo and behold, ridership in Seattle has jumped substantially — outpacing population growth. Here’s a video about the city’s effort:
