Something Is Happening, and DART Is Involved. Good grief. The DMN had a great transportation writer till a couple weeks ago, when Brandon Formby left the paper for a job at the Texas Tribune. Now we get this. It’s a report from the front lines of one of the most important debates happening in North Texas right now. The burbs versus the city. Does DART build suburban track to keep tax receipts flowing, thereby strangling urban Dallas, or does it prioritize mobility and economic development over cash flow? But you wouldn’t know that from reading the DMN story. It’s a mess. Read it. I dare you. (And lest you think this here is an item about media criticism, it isn’t. This is about civics. With muddled reporting like this, people won’t understand what’s at stake. When people don’t understand what’s at stake, they can’t put pressure on their elected officials to do the right thing. Here’s what’s at stake. And here’s a GIF that makes it even easier to understand.)

dmnSeriously, Though, What’s Up With the DMN’s Site? Leading Off was conceived as a digest of the three or four biggest stories in town every morning, which really meant the three or four biggest stories in the paper. Because the paper is still the best source for local news, and the television stations’ websites are impossible to scan. But now the DMN’s site is just as bad. At least on a desktop it is. All tiled up and disorganized, making it hard to know where to look. And just imagine what will happen when Tronc-ish Gannett buys the thing and applies its junky template to the local paper. I guess we could just use our phones to snap pics of the top stories in the printed version and then post those JPGs for you. Is this progress?

David Brown Retires Today. Sorry about that rant. After 33 years in law enforcement and seven years as the chief of police in Dallas, Brown is done today. Maybe he and that other David who was once chief, Kunkle, can ride scooters together.

Mark Cuban Criticizes Donald Trump. On a stair stepper before the preseason game last night, Cuban quoted Einstein and knocked on Trump for not being transparent. Oh, and the Mavs beat the Hornets 95-88.
