Madison Kocian
The Dallas gymnast earned a gold medal as part of the U.S. Women’s Gymnastics team. +5

Ahmed Mohamed’s Family
The Irving “clock boy” filed a lawsuit against Irving ISD, the city of Irving, and MacArthur High School principal Daniel Cummings this week. It invokes Emma Lazarus’ poem “The New Colossus” — the inscription found on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty — in making its civil rights claim:

New Texas Rangers Stadium
The Arlington City Council called for an election this November to decide whether tax dollars will be spent to help the Rangers build a brand-spanking new, $1 billion ballpark to replace their ancient 22-year-old stadium. Supporters of the effort likely got a further boost when images of the team playing a day game on Thursday in triple-digit heat underlined the idea that a retractable roof is a necessity. +500 million

Susan Hawk
The Dallas County district attorney, who’s spent more time battling depression this year than at work, finally returned to her office this week. She still maintains that she has no plans to resign, and it’s unclear whether she’s being paid for the time she spent off the clock at a clinic in Arizona. +1

Pete’s Dragon
Dallas director David Lowery’s film, was not only called a “charming remake” by FrontRow’s own reviewer, but it has earned a 85% Fresh score so far from Rotten Tomatoes. I’m as surprised as anyone to learn that it’s apparently not terrible. +39

Losers

UNT Law School
The nascent program is in serious jeopardy after an American Bar Association committee advised against accreditation because UNT admits too many students with low admission-test (LSAT) scores. Only students graduating from accredited schools can take the bar exam in Texas. -15,133

Snakes
The 70 serpents found in the Fort Worth home of a retired zoo worker after he died face an uncertain future. -66

Prince Fielder
Following a second neck surgery in the last 27 months, the Texas Rangers first baseman/DH and his doctors determined that he’s medically incapable of continuing his Major League career. He said goodbye at a tearful press conference on Wednesday. Awful to see it end this way for him. -84

Dominique Alexander
The organizer of a protest downtown against police brutality ended up arrested for outstanding traffic warrants when he continued to insist upon meeting with Dallas Police Chief David Brown after Brown asked (and Alexander refused) that the planned protest be moved to another area. -27

Peter Brodsky
I was going to list the North Dallas millionaire and head of the Dallas Animal Commission as a winner this week, due to this fawning profile of him in the Morning News: “It would be easy to dislike Brodsky, if he weren’t so likable.” But then I realized this guy is being set up to take the fall if the city can’t get a handle on its loose dog issue. Good luck to him. -45
