Earlier today, Jason put up a poll asking if building a parking garage at Klyde Warren Park was the most Dallas thing ever. The last part of the query alluded to DMN blogger Robert Wilonsky’s post on the subject. The relevant portion:
A parking garage would be built on a new deck between St. Paul and Akard streets, with room for 70 to 90 spaces. That garage — known as Sky Park — would house the park’s offices. There would also be a restaurant and bar with an open-air deck, and it would go directly in front of oilman Ray Hunt’s headquarters. Which is the most Dallas thing ever [emphasis mine].
It sounded sort of familiar when we read it — most Dallas thing ever. But we let it drop. A soccer-enjoying Frontburnervian, however, did not let it drop. He very much kept a strong hold of it. It seems, just in the last year or so, the longtime Dallas reporter and auto parts scion has declared several most Dallas things ever.
Last April, there was the plan to build a parking garage downtown next to another downtown parking garage.
This week, the Congress for New Urbanism is in downtown Dallas holding its annual confab, its theme “Meeting the Demand for Walkable Places.” So of course we’re about to present to you The Most Dallas Thing Ever — a 15-story, 1,500-car parking garage proposed for downtown Dallas that would sit right next door to an existing parking garage and involve disappearing a whole stretch of concrete connecting Commerce and Main streets.
In February, Wilonsky hit us with this tweet featuring a Dallas reference so old-school I barely recognize it, which I think disqualifies it from being the most Dallas thing, but maybe that actually makes it the most Dallas thing. Anyway, have a look:
More recently, there was talk of a Harry Hines mixed-use development proposed to be built around strip clubs and taco joints, which, in fairness, Wilonsky only said could be the most Dallas thing ever. As in:
That would be fantastic. You don’t see too many mixed-use developments built around strip clubs and taco joints. It could be the most Dallas thing ever.
Are there more? Maybe. Feels like probably. Anyway, I guess if pressed I would say building a parking garage at Klyde Warren Park is a very Dallas thing, and at least the most Dallas thing on the list. Is it the Most Dallas Thing Ever, though?
Of course not.
This is.
