Leading Off (7/19/16)

It is Tuesday. Knock it out.

Dallas Connection to the Baton Rouge Shootings. Days before a gunman shot and killed three officers in Louisiana, he showed up in a Dallas barbershop, acting erratically. Calling himself Cosmo Setepenra, he handed out a self-published book titled The Cosmo Way and made a video of the whole thing with a body camera.

Trump Tries To Take Advantage of Slayings. Normally a Republican convention in another state wouldn’t concern us here at Leading Off, but read this great lead by the DMN’s Robert T. Garrett: “Would-be first responder in chief Donald Trump opened his nominating convention Monday night with a string of stand-ins who spoke as if the world is on fire — and he is the hose. Clearly, Trump senses an opening amid the turmoil the country has seen at home and abroad — Black Lives Matter protests, attacks on police in Dallas and Baton Rouge, La., the Bastille Day slaughter of civilians in Nice, France. … What’s unclear is whether Trump, whose national security experience consists of being sent to military school in upstate New York, is credible when he vows to restore Americans’ sense of safety and well-being.”

Watch Out for West Nile Mosquitoes. A third person in Dallas County has been found to have West Nile. The person lives east of White Rock Lake, in the 75228 ZIP code. Cover up, people. Use repellant.

Alamo Drafthouse Coming to Lake Highlands. The movie theater is set to open next spring in a space near Skillman and Abrams. Kudos to The Advocate for breaking the story.
