Since it’s the first day of August, I get the feeling that people are prematurely starting to panic about the imminent conclusion of the summer. It feels like fall already in a freakish bout of extra-cool weather we’re currently experiencing, and I’ve already had ice cream pushed on me twice today. It’s not even noon. First, the sugar-pushers at Pokey O’s brought samples to our offices. And then KXT released an ice cream-themed promotional video for their upcoming Summer Cut concert. Apparently tickets are two-for-one between now and Monday.
Speaking of Summer Cut, I had experienced some events-related confusion recently as the exhibition opening at Valley House Gallery in Far North Dallas this evening (Correction: The opening reception is actually next Thursday, August 7. But you can still see the show tonight.) is also called Summer Cut. So even Dallas’ oldest art gallery is getting in on this theme as the works will actually reference the dog days (I hate that term, but if I have to type the word “summer” one more time, I’m going to lose it).
Steve Martin and Edie Brickell will be at the Winspear this evening. They’ll be accompanied by the Steep Canyon Rangers, and I’ve read in reviews that the line between bluegrass show and standup routine becomes very blurred as Martin definitely hams it up between songs. Not only is that to be expected, I doubt anyone is going to complain about Martin doing what comes natural to him, and it sounds like you’ll get your money’s worth. As for Brickell, she adds a bit of local intrigue to the proceedings as the Oak Cliff native returns to the city that she left after becoming a success. Oh, Dallas. Will we ever be pretty enough to keep one here?
Saturday
The winner of a “Best of Big D” award for best beer selection, Strangeways, will celebrate its third anniversary on Saturday, and I can tell you from experience that this party has been pretty lively in the two years previous. DJ Mark Ridlen will provide the music and there will be drink specials, of course.
The Festival of Independent Theaters will wrap up at the Bathhouse Cultural Center over the weekend. FrontRow’s Lindsey Wilson has a great piece on the opinionated classes between critics, playwrights, and actors that’s taken place since the beginning of the festival and you can read that by going here.
Sunday
Finally, Lakewood Brewing Company will be observing its second birthday with a day-long party at Goodfriend Beer Garden to close out the weekend. 20 percent of sales will benefit the Human Rights Initiative of North Texas, which is an extra essential organization, especially in light of recent events.
