The controversy over UTD’s beloved “Art Barn” may not get as much airtime as some of the other debates raging around town about what we should either tear down or never build at all, but the gallery is facing the very real threat of extinction, at least in regard to its current purpose. No less an authority than the DMN’s Mark Lamster has expressed concern over the award-winning “architectural landmark’s” fate, and our own Peter Simek weighed in recently as well. A live debate has been organized to take place on the campus this evening, and the public’s participation is encouraged. Students and faculty will weigh in, starting at 5:30 pm.

Parquet Courts will play their first-ever Dallas show at Club Dada tonight, and that’s significant since the Brooklyn-based band includes mostly members who once lived in the area, especially in Denton. The group is releasing their new record today, Sunbathing Animal, and the press buildup has included everyone from the New York Times to Grantland. The band’s recent successful run saw them perform on two different late-night talk shows, and we have a lengthy interview with lead-singer Andrew Savage, over on FrontRow.

If you want to welcome the band back to town, do it in style and consider stopping by CBD Provisions for dinner first. I know it’s not in Deep Ellum, but it’s close enough. I stopped by and had a quick dinner following a concert last night, and was given a lesson on rare Mezcals while I ate bourbon chocolate pudding. That’s pretty hard to top.
