Things To Do In Dallas This Weekend: June 6-8

Art Con throws a smaller event in preparation for later in the year; Slow Food Dallas has an ice cream social.

I’ve tried to do my best to avoid these irrelevant and seemingly made-up holidays which seem to exist merely to promote one product or another, but National Doughnut Day has proven impossible to resist.

I’ve already had two this morning and I’ve spent the past hour trying to avoid the third. In far more relevant news, it’s also the 70th Anniversary of D-Day, and yet I’ve heard far more about doughnuts this morning. Priorities.

Time has an entire list of where to shamelessly loiter for free doughnuts, while Boston.com has a scathing takedown of the broken promises of Dunkin’ Donuts on this sacred day. They basically call the Massachusetts-based chain a bunch of liars. Our own Nancy Nichols had some very entertaining thoughts on the holiday, as well as the willful misspelling of this word and DD’s involvement in the degradation of our language. Here’s your weekend:

Friday

If you need to have a real meal and forget about today’s junk food breakfast, then perhaps Chef DAT, aka Chef David Anthony Temple, can help. He’ll be hosting one of his acclaimed Underground Dinners, a pop-up event that includes such unusual menu items as lobster fried rice and foie gras ice cream. So, not exactly health food, but definitely gourmet. KNON’s DJ EZ Eddie D will provide the soundtrack. You’ll have to RSVP to find out where you’ll be dining this evening, by emailing [email protected].

Noises Off will open at the Contemporary Theatre of Dallas this evening, and few works have ever cannibalized their own genre with such success, as the farce-within-a-farce is considered one of the best written plays of its kind. The Contemporary is such a lovely little venue, that I’m always looking for a reason to go back. As I’ve stated before, I wish the dark little bar was open year-round.

Saturday

For nearly ten years now, Art Con has consistently raised mountains of money for other high-minded organizations, by way of art auctions and live performances. The previously annual event is slowly spreading, in the form of scaled-back satellite occurrences over the course of the year. One such example will be held on Saturday, as a smaller auction and a handful of live bands will take place at Life in Deep Ellum. Art Con: “Wrecked” will all benefit the signature AC event later this year. The see-and-be-seen crowd will likely be out in droves, if past Art Con-related happenings are any indication. Stick around for performances by Dark Rooms, French 75, and Ronnie Heart. Heart just released a music video for the track, “Tasty Destination,” which sees the musician stepping comfortably into his leading man, party-starter role, one that he’s cultivated over a number of years.

Garden Cafe will be the scene of an Ice Cream Social, which is a seemingly quaint notion, but this one goes toward the partnership between Slow Food Dallas and Skyline High School. The organization has aided Skyline’s culinary arts program, which is a noble endeavor, and they’re using gin popsicles and Temptress beer floats to fund the effort, so they certainly know how to sweeten the deal. Speaking of Lakewood Temptress, it made a somewhat controversial appearance in our Best Beers in Dallas list, coming in at #25 out of 30. Do you agree?

Sunday

Finally, a couple of Oak Cliff events top off your weekend: The satirical “Funeral” for the Trinity Parkway will take place at the ever-popular Oddfellows in Bishop Arts on Sunday, which is a healthy mix of political commentary as well as a great excuse to have a celebration. Whether or not the dream becomes reality is a different matter.

Howie Day will appear at the Kessler on Sunday, and you may remember the troubled singer’s contributions to the Grey’s Anatomy soundtrack, not to make any assumptions about your taste in both music and television. Enjoy your weekend.
