I don’t mind telling you that today, I am seeing the Veronica Mars movie with poor Peter Simek, who only sort of knew what he was getting into when he invited me to join him on his press screening. When I explode from sheer happiness, don’t miss me too much.
The rest of you people can do other stuff. Miley Cyrus, of course, is at the American Airlines Center for her megatour of scandalized parents who dearly miss Hannah Montana. I don’t hate her. I’m into a few songs off Bangerz, and oh man do I love Postmodern Jukebox’s doo woop version of “We Can’t Stop.” Icona Pop and Sky Ferreira open, two acts worth seeing on their own.
’90s rapper DMX, meanwhile, is at Trees. Fresh off a European tour and volunteering to fight George Zimmerman, he recently found a few hours to crash a wedding in New York City and perform “X Gon’ Give It To Ya.” From what I can tell, the rapper was a pivotal part of many of my friends’ formative years, and they are very excited for this show. Elsewhere in Deep Ellum, Macaulay Culkin’s pizza-themed Velvet Underground cover band is playing at Dada. Because why not, I guess. Lou Reed probably would have loved this idea.
Finally, Amphibian Stage Productions and the Modern Art Museum put on a screening of Donmar Warehouse‘s theatrical staging of Coriolanus. If I wasn’t seeing Veronica Mars tonight, I’d do this. Two reasons. One, when am I ever going to have the chance to see a Donmar show live in London? Probably not for a long time. Plane tickets are expensive. And two, Tom Hiddleston stars.
