It’s back. No, not a sudden resurgence of my extreme irritation with my new neighbors, who, apparently, have some sort of musical group and think the best time for a showcase of their talents is 10 p.m. on a Sunday night. Definitely not. It’s our annual, super wonderful Best of Big D: Food and Drink survey. Don’t worry, neighbors! I’ll make sure you’re nominated for best band when the time comes.
Tonight, speaking of arts and culture stuff, there’s a District 14 candidates forum at the Wyly Theatre. If you live, work, or play in or around the Arts District, you might think about attending. District 14, which encompasses parts of downtown, Uptown, historic east Dallas, Turtle Creek, and Oak Lawn (some 83,000 residents), is newly redrawn. Seven city council candidates are hustling for the spot soon t0 be vacated by Angela Hunt, and all seven will be there this evening to answer questions on topics ranging from arts funding and economic development to traffic and public safety issues. Prior the forum, there’s a 30-minute meet and greet in the theater lobby. In case you need a refresher, that’s Bobby Abtahi (endorsed by none other than Veletta Lill, former executive director of the Dallas Arts District), David Blewett, Kevin Curley, Philip Kingston (endorsed by Angela Hunt), Chuck Kobdish, Judy Liimatainen, and Jim Rogers.
I also recommend dropping by 1814 Magazine‘s pop-up gallery of the finalists and winners of the Prix de 1814 Magazine photography award, at some point. These are some awesome photos, and they’re only on view through the rest of the week. The gallery is open until 7 p.m., which sounds for a perfect post-work jaunt downtown. And then I’d like a cocktail from The Chesterfield. A garden gimlet or a French 75. Either one. I’m not too picky, especially because it’s Monday.
