Fun facts about March. Well, ladies, it’s Women’s History Month. This is also the month when some speechifying gentleman declared, “Give me liberty or give me death!” and Julius Caesar got turned into Swiss cheese. Just give me the weekend, honestly. No need for bloodshed.
Friday
But let’s talk about death anyway. Visiting Yale professor Shelly Kagan is giving a guest lecture at SMU, and he sounds like a super interesting fellow. For one thing, he appears to be in the preeminent lecturer on death. He teaches a philosophy course that’s all about the stuff that comes up as soon as we start contemplating our eventual shuffle off this mortal coil. (You can actually take his course for free, thanks to Yale’s cool Open Courses program). But I do like the idea of hearing him speak in person, which we can do when he delivers “Why is death bad for you?” this afternoon. If you can possibly jump ship for an extended lunch, it sounds like an excellent use of your hour.
Tonight, there is the ever-enjoyable Kelly Clarkson: Burleson native, speaker of truths, belter of patriotic and break-up anthems. She’s at the Verizon Theatre in Grand Prairie, a concert to which you can still obtain tickets. Now, here’s something I’ve wondered. There’s a whole big plotline on Nashville, a very awesome TV show, that revolves around a don’t-call-me-aging country superstar and her refusal to put out a greatest hits album because it makes her seem old. Is this the general consensus? Because Kelly Clarkson already has one, apparently. Anyway, not that important. What’s important is that you don’t really want to do anything in Grand Prairie besides this concert (and maybe Ripley’s Believe It Or Not, if that’s your bag), so perhaps just close your eyes and point.
Saturday
Tonight’s the annual Command Performance gala, the elaborate showcase of ridiculously talented dancers that TITAS has put on for more than two decades. Expect 10 of dance’s brightest rising stars performing everything from classic pas de deux to world premieres of contemporary, TITAS-commissioned pieces, all at the Winspear Opera House. If you’re interested, you can dip a pinky toe into water with a $12 ticket. ‘
In Deep Ellum, Club Dada hosts local band Home by Hovercraft’s album release concert. Are We Chameleons? happens to feature music from their whimsy-rock (and quite good, if I (and every other critic in town) do say so myself) musical On the Eve. If you missed that, by the way, you should be sad. But also glad, because Theatre Three has picked it up for their upcoming season. Datahowler and Bethan support Home by Hovercraft. And if you’re not too freaked out by Cane Rosso’s suspicious, foreign-looking pizza, you could grab a bite there before the show. Kudos to Carol Shih for doing her job and finding that Facebook page ‘o pre-publicity doom, by the way. All us Oak Cliff residents sure would be pleased to have a nice hefty slice to go with our bottle of Hidden Valley. I’ve got one in my purse right now. Also one of those cute little ice packs for school lunches. It’s pink, in case anyone was wondering.

If you didn’t get quite enough dance with Command Performance, the Texas Ballet Theater has a spring performance this weekend at Bass Hall, ending with a matinee on Sunday. The company will perform Lambarena, choreographed by the always-eclectic Val Caniparoli for the San Francisco Ballet. His piece blends traditional African tribal rhythms and music, from which it derives its name, with the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. This sounds like a lot of fun—certainly not your typical classical performance. The program is complete with Glen Tetley’s Voluntaries, a TBT premiere from a choreographer who was also celebrated for his fusions of classical and more modern styles.
