I know I talk about my heavy-duty rain boots a lot. The working title of my future memoir is I Didn’t Need These Rain Boots, After All. But can I just say, in anticipation of wading all over Denton for 35 D this weekend, I’m happy to have them? Because I am.
Friday
Tonight, there’s a special dinner at Asador inside the Renaissance Hotel. The menu, all “seasonal and local,” is created by Chef David Trubenbach, and all the offerings are paired not with wine or beer, but with tequila. Which means it should be an extra good time. Andrew Chalk gave you all the details on Asador back when it opened last year over on SideDish, and I’ve been assured that if you’d like to attend, you can still make a reservation by calling the restaurant.
And of course, there’s musical happenings not taking place in Denton. Girls will play the Granada with supporting act Unknown Mortal Orchestra. I’ve dubbed this San Francisco-based group “most likely to give me an earworm.” It’s a close contest between them, anything by Genesis, and the song “Turn It Off” from Book of Mormon. And if you are making the trek to Denton, The Hood Internet is headlining 35D‘s Indie-Verse showcase at Hailey’s, and Sleep ∞ Over is on late at Andy’s.
Saturday
The beginning of my 35 Denton adventure. Wear something waterproof and bring cash. I’ll be at Best Coast for sure, so if you’re there, give us a shout. No wristband? There’s the cleverly-named side show, 35 des Refusés, which will take place at the Creative Arts Building. It’s headlined by New Wave polka outfit Brave Combo, and it’s completely free.
The Inwood has played quite a few movies I don’t want to see, like something gross about a human centipede. But this weekend they’re screening The Princess Bride, which is a total no-brainer. Of course, if I died every time someone mocked me, I’d have been a goner long ago.
Sunday
Spring break starts, and the Dallas Museum of Art has a whole host of activities planned. Admission is half price all week (except for Monday, when the museum is closed) and there are kid-friendly art activities in the Center for Creative Connections.
Also in the Arts District, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra presents their “Pop Legends in Symphony” concert featuring the music of Neil Diamond, Elton John, and my personal favorite, Stevie Nicks. The orchestra will play, while tribute artists do their best vocal impersonations. Since my love for Fleetwood Mac knows no bounds, I would absolutely be into this.
Don’t forget, though. The Jesus and Mary Chain headline the last main stage show of 35 D, the Scottish band’s first United States performance since 2007. For more 35 D picks, go here. It all ends Sunday.
