Dish Pirate: Motor Sisters Ice Cream’s The Nellie Bly
Inspired by ice cream addict and founder Kari Crowe
Motor Sisters Ice Cream is the sister company to Fort Worth’s Melt Ice Creams. Both were conceptualized by owner and operator Kari Crowe and serve up some of the sweetest treats in Dallas and Fort Worth. Motor Sisters, unlike Melt, is soft serve only. They serve dipped and decadent cones, sundaes, and shakes. All items are named after some pretty bad to the bone ladies that have paved the path for women in history.
The shop’s biggest seller, and one of my personal favorites, is The Nellie Bly. Nellie Bly was the pen name of American journalist Elizabeth Cochrane Seaman. Nellie faked insanity so that she could study the treatment of mental patients from within the institutions. She is also well known for her 72 day trip around the world. The sundae itself is amazing! Layers of vanilla ice cream, salted caramel, malden salt and Motor Sister’s original Mockingbird Mix.
Recipe (Serves 8-10)
Ingredients:
1 gallon vanilla ice cream
Salted caramel sauce (can be found near the ice cream accessories)
Sea salt
Mockingbird Mix:
1 cup pumpkin seeds
1 cup sunflower seeds
1/2 cup sesame seeds
1/2 cup flax seeds
1/4 cup millet seeds
1/4 cup poppy seeds
Preparation:
1. Prepare Mockingbird Mix by combining all seeds and toasting on 300 degrees for 15-20 minutes.
2. Let ice cream soften just a bit.
3. Layer sundae with ice cream, salted caramel sauce, sea salt and Mockingbird Mix. Approx 2-3 layers.
The Mockingbird Mix is great and can be used in other recipes as well. It would be delicious baked on top of pumpkin bread!
