Pique your interest–and tastebuds–this weekend with a visit to one of North Texas’ many farmers markets.
8 a.m. to noon, Saturday
Aside from the usual produce, the market will have tomatoes, as well as straitneck and pattypan squash. Also, you’ll find shelled field peas. (My grandmother would be ecstatic as she’s spent many days shelling peas.) Shoppers will also find soy candles, sugar scrub, and doggie biscuits, too. Here’s a full list of what the market will have this weekend. Looking ahead: The market will host a chef demonstration with Joe Barber on June 25. Participants will learn Barber’s special cake glazing technique. Also, there will be samples and recipes for those in attendance. Learn more here.
The Market |10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday – Sunday
The Shed |10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday and Sunday | 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday
This Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon, bring the kids to the east side of The Shed to Mama Ida’s Garden, where market staff will greet them. Here, they’ll learn about different plants and the planting process. Let your kids play–and learn– as you explore the market’s 26,000-square-foot food hall and vendor market that houses restaurants and a mix of local specialty foods, artisanal food vendors, and seating areas. Because the size of the market can be delightfully daunting, here are a few tips on how to navigate the space. This week, you can find peaches, arugula, and blackberries. The market’s 70-plus vendors often vary but a list of current vendors can be found here.
Flower Mound Farmers Market
9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday
This market is the baby of the bunch, having opened last Saturday. The market had a robust turnout for its inaugural weekend and hopes to keep that momentum. With 50-plus vendors, you’ll find everything from fresh artisan bread from Four Seasons Local Bakery to handcrafted cheeses from Brazos Valley Cheese. A sweet addition: Mrs. Burk’s Buns will debut its Blackberry Buckle at this week’s market. Note: You’ll find the market at 2121 Cross Timbers Rd. in the Town Hall parking lot.
Historic McKinney Farmers Market at Chestnut Square
8 a.m. to noon, Saturday
If you head to the market Saturday morning, browse the selection of organic fresh produce, jams and jellies, honey, fresh-cut flowers, baked goods, and grass-fed beef. Take a break at Dixie’s Store at Chestnut Square. They will be selling soda, old-fashioned candy, ice cream, crafts, and classic toys if you’re looking for some nostalgia.
