The Localist: Melt Ice Creams’ To-Go Pints

I scream. You scream.

Earlier this month we announced that Melt Ice Creams had opened a pop-up shop inside Urban Acres in North Oak Cliff. This is great news for ice cream enthusiasts, as the gourmet, Fort Worth-based shop scoops some of the best ‘cream in town.

All of Melt’s ice creams are made from scratch using seasonal ingredients, and the Oak Cliff outpost is currently offering four flavors. There’s Chocolate Chocolate made with chocolate, from Dude, Sweet Chocolate; Beans, a straightforward vanilla ice cream made with Madagascar vanilla beans; a vegan coconut curry option made with coconut milk; and Nectar of the Gods, a vanilla ice cream that’s swirled with house-made nectarine jam.

While most of the shop’s customers stop in for a scoop (or two) in a waffle cone or cup, Melt also sells its ice creams by the pint. I was pleased to discover this last Sunday, which was coincidentally National Cream Day, as I was too stuffed full of tacos to order a scoop. I watched longingly as my dining companion licked a waffle cone brimming with Madagascar vanilla bean ice cream. “You can get some to-go,” the young girl behind the counter explained. She must have seen the yearning in my gaze.

I ordered a pint of Nectar of the Gods, and a waffle cone. It came out to $9 ($8 for the ice cream and $1 for the cone). It was worth every cent. The only problem I encountered was getting it home before it, well, melted.
