There’s an El Chico in Dubai, and It’s ‘Pure Dallas’

Sharing the food from my city with Muslims near a beach in Dubai was a powerful experience.

Adelaide Cuellar just rolled over in her grave.

You see that picture of a plate of nachos? I snapped it at the El Chico in Dubai.

The first nacho I ever ate was in the late ’60s at an El Chico at Spring Valley and Central. Yesterday I tasted the same version 8,041 miles from my home. The interior is pure Dallas complete with old photos of the famous Cuellar family. The crowd was distinctively different. I sat surrounded by women in black burkas and men in long white dishdashas, and traditional red checkered keffiyeh (headscarves). My world got smaller fast. Sharing the food from my city with Muslims near a beach in Dubai was a powerful experience.
