It’s Labor Day Weekend. Need I say more? For those of you that didn’t catch the last flight out to Destin (because why would you ever leave the great state of Texas?), this weekend gives you every bit of reason to love that you’re here.

Friday, August 29

Begin the weekend relaxation process by putting down as much BBQ and beer you can stomach along with over 20,000 food lovers at the 6th annual Bedford Blues and BBQ Festival. Work off all that ‘cue by moving your feet, as this three day event features blues and rock performers like Petty Theft, Old Gray Mule, and Cookie McGee. Festivities run 6 – 10 pm on Friday and 2 – 10 pm on Saturday and Sunday across the street from the Bedford City Hall Complex. General admissions tickets start at $7 online or at the gate (cash only).

Watermelon Margaritas. Like actual watermelons filled with Tequila, fresh lime juice, a splash of Triple Sec and, well, duh – fresh watermelon juice. The Gods of Truck Yard, I bow down to you. Starting at 5 pm and going ‘til they run out (there are only 40), you can take part in the Great Watermelon White Trash Bottle Service Bash (they Really Like Long Titles). This is only for groups of 5 people or more priced at $69.

Saturday August 30

It’s only natural that America marks the start of its favorite pastime in the home of some of the best football (or should I say it’s ironic? Sorry Cowboys). ESPN’s College Gameday will begin and end its 2014 season from Sundance Square in Fort Worth, Texas in advance of the Cowboys Classic, and close for the College Football National Championship January 12. Opening weekend at AT&T Stadium will pit defending national champion Florida State against Oklahoma State on Saturday Night Football as part of DICK’s Sporting Goods Kickoff Week at 8 p.m. on ABC. Dallas may not make an appearance on the show (Pony Up and make it happen this year SMU!), but enjoy a couple or five morning redneck mimosas and you won’t care what team you’re cheering for.

As if the Texas heat wasn’t already making us sweat, Hypnotic Donuts is giving us another reason to tote around personal mister fans. Sign up to compete in their 3rd Annual Beat the Heat contest, which consists of eating five donuts topped with ghost pepper icing, fresh habañeros, fresh jalapeños, dried Asian peppers and drops of ghost pepper sauce. Make your claim to spicy fame at 3 pm in the Dallas Hypnotic Donuts parking lot by eating the 5 donuts fastest or just simply eating the most in 15 minutes. The Winner will receive a Beat the Heat trophy, a gift bag of various hot sauces and $50 cash. Registration is open to anyone 18 or older and a fee of $15 must be paid in advance. Email [email protected] with a subject line of BTH and include your contact number or call the shop at 214-668-6999.

Sunday August 31

Screen Shot 2014-08-28 at 2.56.44 PMDeep Ellum Brewing Co. defines hard work as the “dedication it is to make a damn fine brew” and I can totally respect that as I enjoy yet another Dallas Blonde six-pack. In recognition of home brewing, DEBC hosts its third annual Labor of Love from 6 to 10 pm. Expect 40+ Texas local homebrewers, commemorative Labor of Love glasses with samples of your local home brew and Deep Ellum brew, an award ceremony, food trucks and local live music from Justin Pickard and the Thunderbird Winos. Judging categories include Hoppy, Spiced, Malty, Dark, Session, Sour, Whimsical and Fan Favorite. Drink your heart out and use Uber promo code “DrinkDeep” to score $20 off your first ride. Get your tickets at $30 soon because it will sell out fast.

Didn’t get that seaside Labor Day vacay booked this year? Missing the palm trees and sounds of crashing waves? Well Dallas has the beach heat, and thanks to the guys over at Driftwood, we have the taste of the sea as well. Starting at 2pm, you can grab whole Maine lobster and sides of New England-style corn and potatoes for just $28 a person, as well as shucked oysters at a custom raw bar inside the restaurant. Sip on cocktails, wine and beer at special prices, while a DJ provides the soundtrack to your own little paradise in the city. Call 214-942-2530 for reservations.

The Grapevine Bar will celebrate Labor Day from 1 pm to 2 am with Happy Hour all day and $0.50 Tacos from S&M Eats. 100% of your $5 admission at the door will go to the Marit Peterson Melanoma Fund, because we love more reasons to stuff our faces.

Monday September 1

Dallas Beer Kitchen has a couple surprises up its sleeve to mark the start of this new month. In case you weren’t already one of the individuals cozying up for hours at the bar, DBK will roll out a new dinning room including refinished wood bar tops, new dinning tables, new cushy dinning chairs and comfy new bar stools. Additionally, they revamped the menu with new plates like Creamy Zucchini Brisket Pasta, Spicy Shrimp and Chorizo Flatbread, Crispy Texas Quail served over Hatch Chile Mascarpone Grits, Skillet Mac & Cheese, and Housemade Beer Ice Cream like Blood and Honeysicle.
