farmersMarket_02_char (1)From mudbugs to cooking demonstrations, there’s plenty to explore throughout DFW this weekend at area farmers markets. Each market has something unique to offer, so make sure you get the pick of the best and beat the inevitable heat–-in case you needed that extra push to hit the farmers market circuit a little earlier in the day than usual.

Coppell Farmers Market
If you’re looking for an artisan touch to your farmers market experience this weekend, head to Coppell. From baked goods and small-batch prepared foods to doggie biscuits and soaps, vendors from across the area will have unique, one-of-a-kind merchandise. The market’s produce section is back in full swing, with new, colorful offerings outside the traditional greens and root vegetables arriving weekly. In anticipation of Saturday, farmers bring what’s ready to pick on Friday, so look out for some surprises.

Recently making their seasonal debut were peaches, strawberries, red and green slicing tomatoes, and cherry tomatoes. Pinto beans, leeks and the season’s first peppers are in limited supply this early in the season, so shop early. Spinach is also in limited quantities as production is beginning to wind down for the season.

Market staples such as white-fleshed freestone peaches, Texas-raised cherries, blackberries and blueberries will also be available. The market will offer plentiful varieties of protein, including pastured, grass-raised-and-finished beef and lamb, free-range chicken and eggs, and Texas Gulf seafood.

Weathertop Farm will have organically grown greens, turnips, carrots and squash. Ponder’s D-Bar Farm & Nursery is bringing hydroponically grown beautiful lettuce. There will also be selections from La Esperanza Farms and Little Johns Plant and Produce Distributors. Pottsboro’s K Bar K Ranch will have grass-fed beef, chicken and lamb.

Grand Prairie Farmers Market
Each Saturday, the market features events such as cooking demonstrations, gardening classes and car shows. This Saturday is no different. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Heads or Tails Cajun Crawfish catering company will be boiling Louisiana-bred mudbugs, accompanied by potatoes and corn, all for $10 per pound. Stick around and enjoy the crawfish in the beer garden while live music plays.

There’ll also be a vast selection of produce from Baugh Farms, Demases Farm and Promise of Peace Garden, including squash, berries, onions, carrots, potatoes and herbs. Don’t miss one-of-a-kind  all-natural, gluten-free meals from My Gluten-Free Friend and coffee from local Noble Coyote Coffee Roasters.
