Kick off Father’s Day weekend with a family outing to one of the area’s farmers’ markets. This is an especially celebratory weekend, with several hosting annual celebrations. From ice cream tastings and grass-fed beef burgers to a car and motorcycle show, the pleasures of summer are officially on.
Historic Downtown McKinney (Chestnut)
The market will have its 19th annual Killis Melton Ice Cream Crank Off on Saturday. Described as similar to “a chili cook-off, only cooler,” the Crank Off will feature a plethora of homemade ice creams. Nothing is too off-base in this competition, as past flavors have included everything from habanero mango to bacon and waffle. The cranking will begin at 10 a.m. under the shaded canopy of trees in front of the Dulaney House at Chestnut Square. Arrive early, and enjoy the market before hitting the ice cream.

Collin County Farmers Market
The market’s second annual Bikes, Burgers, Brew, and a Band event is set for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Kyle Brooks and The Rhythm and Beards will perform while patrons enjoy local grass-fed beef burgers and beer from FireWheel Brewing Co. While there, pick up some heirloom tomatoes, corn, and more from Double D Farm and a beautiful flower bouquet from Spring Creek Organic Farm.

Coppell Farmers Market
Head to Coppell for a vast selection of mixed vegetables, mixed peppers, and jalapenos–all new this week. Also recently available, stock up on summer veggies like bok choy, broccoli, kohlrabi and cabbage; green, red and cherry tomatoes; flat- and round-snap green beans; and pickling and slicing cucumbers. Top off your visit with Texas cherries, a first-time vendor at the market this year. White-fleshed freestone peaches and red-fleshed cling peaches are great for jams and cobblers. In addition to a variety of edible selections, the market will also have vendors offering doggie biscuits, soaps, and lotions from natural ingredients. On the second Saturday of the month, Nasser Mazandarani brings his Wholesome Habits Kale Chips. These nutrient dense kale chips are free of sugar and gluten and use whole, natural ingredients for flavorings with every ingredient pictured on package labels.

This market should be your No. 1 stop for fresh, locally grown produce. From spinach to arugula to squash and zucchini, vendors will have a wide selection from which to choose. Also, pick up some goat cheese perfect for summery salads, tamales or honey.

In addition to its usual vendors, the market will feature spice vendors this weekend. Back by popular demand, the Kate Weiser pop-up ice cream shop will be on site offering cool, sweet treats. Baugh Farms will also have first-of-the-season heirloom tomatoes for sale.
