If there’s one thing Dallas has always needed, it’s a popsicle shop.
Birmingham’s frozen pop shop is expanding into Dallas. And soon, too. Steel City Pops has three locations in its home state, but its plans to move into the Texas market are already underway.
By late April/early May, the first Texas store should be open at 2012 Greenville Avenue, inside the old Zubar space across the street from Trader Joe’s. Three weeks to a month later, the Fort Worth location at 908 Currie Street will follow in Dallas’ footsteps. David Pressley, the vending and logistics manager for the Greenville space, says owner Jim Watkins went to Baylor University and his wife is from Texas. It always made sense to build his empire west.
At Steel City Pops, families can watch pops being made inside an open kitchen. Ingredients are all-natural and organic. Steel City Pops tries to source locally, whenever possible, and it sometimes (during certain seasons) does this thing called chocolate-dipping for $1. Popsicle flavors are split into two categories, creamy and fruity, which range from a cherry sour cream to a strawberry balsamic.
(Whatever chocolate chili is, we want some.)
“Our menu’s always changing,” says Pressley. “We’ll obviously have our opening menu, but we’re trying to figure out new flavors.”
