On the Hunt for Greek Food in Dallas

Where are the best Greek ingredients and dishes?

I need help. In more ways than one. But let’s start with this: I’ve been in Texas for five months, and I’ve yet to eat one piece of Greek food that hasn’t been cooked in my own kitchen or delivered to me on a metallic plate. I haven’t purchased good feta or kalamata olives. I haven’t sought out grape leaves or kefalotiri or melomakorana. I haven’t even had a bowl of avgolemeno. It’s shameful.

But then came that metallic plate of loukoumades, baked up by Rana Abla of Sableh Sweet & Savory. Loukoumades are fried pieces of dough, drizzled with honey, and best served warm. They’re Greek donuts of sorts. Somehow, word of my Greek heritage and love for Greek sweets (and all sweets), spread to Abla, and there she was, standing in D Magazine World Headquarters, bearing gifts. Abla’s version was slightly smaller than those you might get at a Greek festival and a bit denser, though certainly not doughy. They maintained that wonderful airy quality. In short, they were delicious.

The staff agreed. By the next day, the plate was clear, and I realized that I need to get my act together. It’s time to get to know Dallas’ Greek community. So, two questions: Where are the best Greek restaurants? And where are the Greek grocery stores?

Efharisto.

I LOVE Yanni’s Greek Cafe in Murphy-George Bush and Renner Road. A bit out of the way, but it is totally worth the drive. It is BYOB. The chef/owner is Greek, so it will definitely will be traditional. https://www.facebook.com/YannisGreekCafe

I love my husband’s place, Yannis Greek cafe in Murphy , come and visit us! my husband, Yaya and the restaurant staff will make your visit unforgettable

I love Yanni’s Greek Caffe 280 farm to market Rd 544 # 108., 972) 424- 9494 Murphy, Texas. This was a great Greek experience. The food was great, the employees were very friendly and helpful and the entire experience was less…Best food! Don’t think you can get a better gyro in/near the city. The gyro salad is to die for, large portion with generous meat serving, good service and nice atmosphere. BYOB is a nice feature. Love the pita, hummus and chicken gyros. Dolmas are well made. Grecian chicken a bit bland but nice and juicy. I love this place! Came here for dinner very often & had a great experience. First off, don’t be alarmed when the waitress or the owner comes over & sits down at your table & starts talking to you, that’s just how they do here. Everyone that works here is super nice & friendly. The waitresses are great at recommending stuff without pressuring you to order it if you don’t want to.
    Everything was amazing.
I can’t wait to go back & try some of the other food here like the Gyros.

Yanni’s Greek Cafe is the place to go if you are looking for Real Homemade Greek food in the DFW area. The restaurant is located at 280 FM 544 Ste #108 Murphy, TX 75094- totally worth the drive… The food is always hearty, fresh… and very tasty… Lovely atmosphere!!!

Another vote for Platia Greek Kouzina in Frisco. It’s a bit of a drive for me but the food is so good. And it’s BYOB.

For an actual Greek market you have to head out to Ft. Worth http://www.apollothegreek.com/. It’s the only true Greek market I know of in DFW.

Try Sara’s Market and Bakery at 750 Sherman St,, Richardson, TX 75081
    (972) 437-1122 for Middle Eastern groceries. Try Fadia’s Deli & Bakery at 581 W Campbell Rd #127, Richardson, TX 75080 (972) 918-9998 for wonderful baked goods.

  • Rodney Haas

Indeed great for middle eastern. And they do sell items that would be found in Greece. But neither is actually Greek.

  • minorscratch

    Little Greek isn’t bad

  • Fanitsa

There are 3 places that come to mind off the top of my head. All the owners are Greek as well– and the food is good at all 3 places!! If you want that sort of hip Greek food & amazinggggg pastries like you would get in Greece (the pastry chef is from Greece and worked in a ζαχαροπλαστειο there)– Zorbas in Plano. If you want rustic country Greek food with flavorful fare– Platia in Frisco. If you want a more refined/take your in-laws to- fancier type of place– Greek Isles in Plano, and you must try their homemade baklava-ice-cream for dessert. Zorbas and Platia are both BYOB, while Greek Isles offers a variety of Greek wines and spirits. Hope that helps!!! From one Greek Girl to another! 😉 καλή όρεξη!

The most authentic Greek cuisine I have had in Dallas (or in the South to be more precise) was at Stratos Greek Restaurant off Northwest Hwy. The food is exquisite and the environment is lively and as flavorful as the food. From the freshly-made dolmades to the beautiful belly dancers in the evenings, this place cannot be beat!

  • Bea

The summary is Stratos, Platia, Zorbas, Yiannis, Ziziki’s, Kostas and Greek Isles…. we just moved here ourselves six months ago. Everyone is biased towards one or the other…just have to try them all. One thing is for sure, there is no Greek market like the ones we’ve been used to in Chicago. The feta, olive oil, and olive choices leave a lot to be desired; none are top rate…have to order online. I will say that we have not visited Apollo at Watauga, TX yet; we will try. When it comes to Greek food my husband is tough to please, only likes authentic … he just installed an authentic BBQ (ψησταρια) with rotisserie for whole lamb that he imported from Greece. Cristina come and visit :):)

  • Lisa Georgalis

The best Greek food is at Stratos Taverna! LOVE IT!!!!!!!

Geez–nice to see Stratos family members commenting multiple times. The fact is there are no really good greek restaurants in Dallas. If you are used to greek food in Chicago or Ny, you will be disappointed by the restaurants here. Lots of gyros and souvlaki and baklava but good luck getting anything beyond that!.

  • Anonymous

    Zorba’s is my favorite

  • clh

I 3rd (4th and 5th) Platia in Frisco. I go here all the time for work lunches and the Gyro is fantastic, which is the ultimate test of a greek place for me. I’m not a dolmas fan, but my coworker says they are the best he’s had in dallas.

  • DALLASRESTAURANTGIRL

Stratos Greek Taverna on NW Hwy in Dallas is my pick for Greek food that is truly as yummy and authentic as it gets. They recently celebrated 10 years in Dallas, which is not easy to do, and intro’d a delicious new brunch menu!
