What To Drink Now: Dad’s Day

Father’s Day is this Sunday so if you haven’t decided on the perfect gift to show your dad how special he is, give him what you know he will love – spirits.  And there are many unique options that are sure to please even the most distinguished palate. Here are a few ideas to consider.

The Macallan Single Malt Scotch will please any dad, whether it be the 10 year or 30 year, dad will know you care.  The ideal way to enjoy any aged Macallan is either neat or over ice, but the scotch is so good you don’t want it to get watered down.  Now you can enjoy your 18 year with a single sphere of ice, similar to the ice Macallan’s ice ball machine creates for their scotch….this one won’t cost you $1000 though. You can find Tovolo Sphere Ice Molds at Sur la table for just over $10, pair with a bottle of Macallan and dad is set.

I am completely in love with the 1888 from Brugal, aged first in American oak barrels then in Sherry casks, creating a spicy, caramel and toffee filled rum delicious served neat or with a few ice cubes.  If your dad is a scotch lover, especially a Macallan sherry cask lover, they are sure to enjoy the 1888.

If you are looking for something more than simply a bottle of dad’s favorite spirit, Ron Abuelo, the premium Panamanian oak-aged rum, has created a special Father’s Day gift package which includes a 750ml bottle of the Ron Abuelo 12 Años rum with a stylish and convenient travel kit.

If dad is an Avenger’s fan, comic book collector or simply enjoys an interesting bottle of scotch with a twist, Highland Park Single Malt Scotch has introduced the Valhalla Collection, a range of unique whiskies inspired by Nordic Gods, with Thor featured as the first inspiration. The 16 year aged scotch is filled with layers of dried fruit, baking spice and vanilla notes with intensity, strength and complexity, similar to the God that inspired the spirit.  1500 bottles are available in the US, available at Spec’s in Dallas.

There are so many options for the tequila fan – you can never go wrong with Patron Silver, consistently clean and fresh with a smooth, silky palate; but also consider Man in Black Tequila from Kinky Friedman for the dad who embraces the attributes of some of the greatest men in black in history, like Johnny Cash, Palladin, even Batman, and of course, Kinky. Crafted from 100% blue agave in the highlands of Mexico, this is a spicy tequila with a great story.

Maker’s Mark 46 takes the traditional whisky to a new level by taking fully matured bourbon and adding seasoned French oak staves, allowing the bourbon to capture additional caramel, vanilla and spice notes.  There isn’t a specific time this additional maturation happens, just until the master distillers believe it is aged to perfection, crafting smooth and delicious spirit.

Still can’t decide?  Head out to the first annual Craft Cocktails Texas event starting Thursday and taste dozens of spirits from all over the world, including the introduction of a new rum from Anchor Distilling Company, Pink Pigeon Rum, crafted from molasses and blended with hand-picked Bourbon vanilla from orchids. Pink Pigeon is a single-estate, Mauritian rum.  Craft Cocktails Texas Main Street Garden’s festival on Saturday, June 16th, will serve as the official launch party for Texas.
