Ice cream rumble at Dallas Farmers Market.

Saturday from 10:00 AM until Noon you can take part in a fun event at the Dallas Farmers Market: The 4th annual Mama Ida Ice Cream Social. For $5 (free to DFMF members) you can sample ice cream and sorbets created by the Dallas County Youth Village where local chefs like Chad (Parigi) Hauser and Jeffrey (Suze) Hobbs donate their time as teachers. I attended last year and it was loads of fun. Hauser put the winning frozen concoction, roasted fig and brandy ice cream, on the Parigi menu for a while. If nothing else, introduce yourself to Miss Ida. She’s a great gal to know. Now, go. Deets below.

Local farms provide ingredients to Dallas County Youth Village students for custom ice cream recipes

(DALLAS) June 17, 2010- From 10 a.m. to noon June 19, for only five dollars (free for Dallas Farmers Market Friends members), shoppers at the Dallas Farmers Market can sample inventive ice cream and sorbet recipes made from the freshest, local herbs, fruit and cream in the 4th Annual ‘Mama Ida Ice Cream Social.’

Young men from the Dallas County Youth Village, taught by local chefs Chad Houser (Parigi), Jeffrey Hobbs (Suze) and foodie Yvaun Olsen (Chef’s Produce Co.), will expand on past flavors like Peach Carmel Swirl ice cream and Watermelon Ginger Thyme sorbet using fresh, local ingredients to create their own delicious recipes. Local herbs, cucumber, blackberries, peaches – even tomatoes – are provided by area farmers like Oak Farms (Dallas), Lemley’s Produce & Plants (Canton), Fretwell Produce (Canton) and Dallas-based distributor, Chef’s Produce Co. for each unique recipe.

Named in honor of Dallas Farmers Market Friends (DFMF) founder, Ida Papert, the competition is designed to highlight the Dallas Farmers Market’s ripe, summer produce and to inspire creativity in using it. Shoppers are encouraged to taste and cast votes for their favorites and one lucky winner will receive a cash prize.

Even local restaurants and caterers like Culpepper Steakhouse, Bijoux, Stephan Pyles, Hattie’s, Tillman’s Roadhouse, George Catering, Cassandra’s Catering, Nonna, Park and Lucia’s Cocina will get in the act to offer samples of their favorite cool treats, though they will not be judged.

In 2009, more than 2,700 ice cream samples were served. “Reckless Abandonment,” a team of students from Dallas’ Le Cordon Bleu Cooking School, beat out a dozen other entries with its winning Roasted Fig and Brandy ice cream. Visit the DFMF Facebook page for last year’s winning recipe. The Dallas Farmers Market is located at 1010 South Pearl Expressway in downtown Dallas.
