“Jealousy, power, greed and revenge have proven a powerful narrative to link the historical use of poison as an effective weapon that left a trail of mystery and cold cases in its wake.”

EVENT

Embark with us on a lighthearted journey through the centuries old ritual of poisoning at Hotel St Germain. Join us for a monthly five-course seated wine dinner exploring the intricacies of the secret world of poisoning beginning in May and continuing through July.

BACKGROUND

As a weapon of homicide, the act of poisoning was secret and required close contact with the target. Frequently cloaked in food or drink, in varied doses and with very effective results, victims’ symptoms often resembled those of common diseases and their deaths were often attributed to natural causes. Murder by poison has had many practitioners and for centuries its’ criminal service as a great equalizer went undetected.

From ancient times through the 19th century, a shared culture of magic and poison permeated all levels of society; fascinating everyone from seamstresses to duchesses and connecting the lower classes to the centers of power, even The Royal Court. Toxicologists say “The dose makes the poison” as even common foods that we routinely consume (apples, peaches, almonds, mushrooms) can turn deadly if ill prepared or mishandled.

History is rife with elaborately planned murders, employing known toxic substances, lacing herbs and spices in food or drink. Imagine the distraction and allure of a luscious pastry, a sumptuous roast or hearty wine, whether served publicly at a State Dinner, or secretly cloaked as a gift with an intoxicating love note promising intimate delights!

Against this backdrop of mystery, intrigue and gastronomy, Hotel St Germain has planned an entertaining, informative three part dining series. Historical menus paired with wine and spirits will be featured, reflecting the changing tastes of palates spanning several eras. Enjoy three gastronomic events with illustrated programs, amusing anecdotes, archival documents and court reports of famous documented poisonings. Haute cuisine meets C.S.I. Seated Dinner, Five Course Menu paired with Wine and Spirits $95 price per person.

Mama Pita To Offer Free Taste Of The Mediterranean During Saturday Grand Opening

Weekend activities to benefit Minnie’s Food Pantry/The Giving Movement

PLANO, Texas (May 18) — North Texans will get a free taste of the Mediterranean on Saturday, May 22, when Mama Pita Mediterranean Grill celebrates its Grand Opening at the Shops at Legacy (5800 Legacy Drive).

Grand opening activities include:

•   Free Pita Wraps from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

•   Free appetizers all day.

•   Hourly drawings for Shops at Legacy gift cards, FC Dallas tickets and Frisco Rough Riders tickets

Mama Pita will also donate 10% of all sales from Saturday night and Sunday to Minnie’s Food Pantry/The Giving Movement. The Giving Movement is a local charity organization serving the needs of children and their families that live in impoverished areas and who rely on assistance for something as simple as their next meal. The organization’s goal is to educate, empower and provide resources to help the people it assists become contributing members to society.

In addition, the Plano Chamber of Commerce will officially welcome Mama Pita to the city with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday at 11 a.m.

Featuring authentic Mediterranean family recipes that have been refined and handed down over six decades, Mama Pita offers a range of fresh, flavorful dishes that combine Armenian, Greek European and Middle Eastern influences. Mama Pita uses simple, hand-picked ingredients that are rich in flavor, color and texture, offering a true Mediterranean dining experience.

The Plano restaurant is based on a successful chain of upscale restaurants operated in the Mediterranean region by restaurant veteran Tedy Ramy.

Together, with local entrepreneurs Ziad Dalal and Bechara Harfouche, Ramy is recreating that experience in Plano in the increasingly popular fast-casual setting.

“Because Mediterranean food is still new to many, we wanted to create a simple, affordable way to experience the true flavors and recipes of the region,” said Harfouche. “That’s why we are so excited about Mama Pita.”

At Mama Pita, diners are able to customize their own salads, pita wraps or combination platters featuring fresh meats and vegetables prepared and grilled right in front of them in a traditional Mediterranean style.

The menu also features:

•   Traditional Mediterranean wraps that contain no fat or trans fats, are flavored with a squeeze of olive oil and prepared and baked in-house.

•   Platters, wraps or baked pita chips all accompanied by a choice of original, red beet  or carrot hummus, baba ghannouj (eggplant), garlic paste or tzatziki (homemade yogurt) dips.

•   Dips made from scratch using fresh ingredients, with no preservatives or color additives.

“The great thing about Mediterranean foods is that they are full of rich flavor and texture, but do so without a lot of the negative health side effects of other diets,” said Harfouche.

Restaurant hours are Sunday – Thursday, 11 a.m. – 9:30 p.m.; and Friday – Saturday, 11 a.m. – 10:30 p.m. Prices for main entrees range from $6.95 to $8.95.
