Books, where do I keep thee?
There’s nothing like a good book on a Sunday afternoon. Am I right? (I think I remember doing that before I had a little one.) But seriously, books are comfy additions to our homes and certainly are a key part of decorating. The color, the graphics, and even the textures add a layer of interest to your space. Even those that have gone digital need a tome or two!
Obviously, the coffee table, side tables, consoles etc. beg for a Tom Ford edition to scream chic to your various visitors. But when it comes to actual storage, the standard shelving just won’t do.
Here are some of my favorite options:
- I could not be more obsessed with MDF Italia’s Random bookcase. It’s amazing as a backdrop to a modern (or not) living space or kids room (not to mention it’s mucho storage capabilities). It also works well for displaying your brass horse head collection. I mean my brass horse head collection. Someday I’ll get help for that obsession…I digress.
- For the DIY hubby (or “fearless with tools” Mama), the cable spool book-mobile table is adorable for the kiddos book collection.
- There’s really nothing more elegant than lovely books mixed with pretties on a simple etagere. Tip: most hardcovers look better without the jacket, so don’t be afraid display your coffee table and other visible volumes ‘naked’!
- With every home project we do, including ‘investment’ pieces in each room always comes up. Those are the pieces that you keep forever and can move from living to family room to closet as your needs evolve. They are often iconic pieces like the Eames storage unit. Even your trashy romance novels (moi?!) will look excellent on this well designed lovely.
- Another not so usual choice is the pedestal Array Bookcase (in yellow or gray) at CB2. It’s terribly functional and has a footprint of 14”. Perfect for the minimalist.
A final thought: books are for reading (wait, what?), so enjoy them on the inside as well as the outside. No one ever said when looking back on their life, “I wish I had read fewer books and watched more TV.” Am I right? Surrounding yourself with pages of inspiration is always a good thing.
