weekend

Shopping, reading, live performances, and a whole lot of art making. Yep, it’s the weekend. Time to make some plans… Herewith a few suggestions.

Kimberly McDonald Trunk Show at Forty Five Ten
For your shopping pleasure, Forty Five Ten is hosting a Kimberly McDonald trunk show today and tomorrow from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. featuring the latest pieces from the jewelry and textile designer’s (seriously stunning) collection. And for the home design lovers out there, there’s also Blue Print’s  backyard sale taking place on Saturday (think: icy margaritas, tacos, and up to 75% off).

Big Read Dallas’ “The Read-In”
On Saturday, head to Klyde Warren Park from 4-6 p.m. for “The Read-In,” the final event of Big Read Dallas. My amazing friend and co-worker Krista Nightengale has orchestrated the two-hour celebration capping off April’s city-wide initiative to collectively read Fahrenheit 451. There will be dramatic readings by Undermain theater actors, dance performances by Booker T. Washington students, the creation of a live mural by Sour Grapes, and tunes from DJ Tyrone Smiley. On the food front, Crazy Fish, Nammi, Ruthie’s, and Trailercakes food trucks are all creating special menu items inspired by Fahrenheit 451.

Etsy Dallas Spring Bash
Also on Saturday, Etsy Dallas is hosing its 5th annual Spring Bash event featuring more than 40 artists and crafters at The Shops at Park Lane from 11 a.m.-7 p.m., where you can shop handmade accessories, art, housewares, kiddo (and adult) clothes, jewelry, paper goods, and more (view the full line up of artists here). In addition to lovely handmade goods, the Bash will also feature free make and take crafts, food samples provided by Whole Foods, a free photo booth, and a playground for the kiddos. Get there early, as the first 50 shoppers will get free collectible Bash Bags™ chock full of handmade goods. As an added bonus, many of the stores at The Shops at Park Lane will be having sidewalk sales and hosting special activities.

Family Activities at The DMA: Studio Creations: From 2D to 3D
Then on Saturday and Sunday, the DMA is hosting 45-minute art making workshops at 1, 2, or 3 p.m. The free events taking place in the C3 art studio will examine works by Ellsworth Kelly and Naum Gabo to see how these artists create sculptures from flat shapes. Then attendees will then use a variety of techniques to make their own three-dimensional sculptures out of flat materials.

The Great Create at The Nasher Sculpture Center
Last but not least, there’s still time to buy a ticket to The Nasher’s Great Create family fundraiser taking place on Sunday from 1-4 p.m. D Moms Art Editor Lucia Simek and I will be there hosting an “Art Imitation” project inspired by the works of  Christo and Giacometti, and we are so excited to help get kiddos flexing their creative muscles.

Happy Weekend!
