Into The Weekend (And Lessons in How Not to Parent from Anita Pallenberg)

I tend to believe that  judging other people’s parenting is always a bad thing… Better to focus on your own house I say, but (you knew there was a “but” coming) there’s nothing like reading Life (the autobiography of Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards) to make you feel like mother of the year.

Anita Pallenberg… Oy vey.

After finishing this epic tome for our couple’s book club (sorry Bryan, I realize I’ve made your life an utter hell by outing your participation in a couple’s book club), I’m thinking I could plop the girlies in front of a Sponge Bob Square Pants marathon and feed them a steady stream of soda and miniature Twix bars for the next two days and they’d come out the other end just fine.

But rock star memoirs aren’t known for setting the “good parenting” bar, so in lieu of the Sponge Bob/candy extravaganza, we’ll likely do other more virtuous activities this weekend.

Herewith a few promising possibilities:

North Oak Cliff Music Festival
This festival happening at Lake Cliff Park tomorrow from 11:30-8 p.m. would let me tap my inner rock star without scarring the girls for life. In addition to a formidable lineup of bands, there will be a slew of food trucks on hand + plenty of activities for the kiddos. You can purchase discounted advance tickets here (children under 10 are free).

Target First Saturdays at The Nasher
You could also hit the Nasher tomorrow for their “First Saturdays” event. This month’s theme is “Nature,” so in addition to yoga and storytime, you and the littles can explore the garden, ogle sculptures, and make nature walk collages to take home. The event runs from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., and admission is free.

Good Local Market
If you need more Saturday goodness, Good Records on Greenville is partnering with the Deep Ellum Local Market, to transform their parking lot turns into a local bazaar from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. You’ll find vintage jewelry, fresh roasted coffees, food trucks, and more.

Latino Arts Fest
Last but not least, there’s Sunday’s Latino Arts Fest from noon – 5 p.m. in Bishop Arts. The fest showcases Latino poets, artists, performers, and musicians within the community. In addition to musical performances by Mariachi Quetzal and the Felix Flores Band, there will be art installations, interactive creative projects, spoken word poetry presented by Wordspace, and a storytime for kids… All of which sound v. cool.

(It should be noted that our events guru/arbiter of all things cool Liz Johnstone turned me on to those last two happenings. Thanks Liz!)
