You had a rough 2016. While the year that was may not have been that much worse than every other year, it was rough, and you’re already looking forward to 2017 — a 12-month blank slate full of hope and potential. You’d rather not pick through the wreckage of the past. The year-end lists will take care of that.

Instead, you are planning some early highlights for the year ahead. You plan to start things on a positive note. Willie Nelson is playing two shows at the Granada, on Jan. 3 and 4. A legend. A great venue. This is intimate, as the marketing materials tell you. This is the very pinnacle of intimacy. This is bunk beds intimate. Double dip in the queso intimate. Nelson might as well be blowing clouds of Willie’s Reserve directly in to your nostrils.

It’s mid-November when tickets go on sale, and you’re by your computer at 11 a.m., ready to smash that “buy tickets” icon like it’s the reset button on the last miserable 11 months. You’re denied, less than a minute later — sold out, defeated by the 400 people with the presale links and the armies of online scalpers and their robots, machines that have had a great year and don’t even know the words to “Always On My Mind.”

You keep your cool. This was to be expected. Of course tickets sold out faster than you can say “whiskey river.” This is Willie. This is intimacy. You’re undeterred. Several weeks later, you’re back at your computer. You check StubHub, and promptly faint:

When you wake up, you realize that it’s not all that bad, with the average resale ticket going for closer to $400. Regardless, they are not cheap. You are not a wealthy person. You shake your fist at the sky and curse the scourge of online scalping. But it’s Willie, and he’s not getting any younger. How many more chances will you have to see him in concert?

You now face a dilemma, the first of the not even new year.

It was a rough 2016. You have to start 2017 better. To grit your teeth and buy expensive tickets from an online reseller to see Willie Nelson at the Granada, go here.

You just don’t have the money. To close your browser window and banish all thoughts of Willie Nelson from your mind, go here.
